The WIAA Wrestling postseason kicks off Saturday with Regionals. Division 1 will move the top two wrestlers from each bracket on the Sectionals, a change from previous years when the top four move on.
SECTIONAL A: REGIONAL 4 @ SHAWANO
Teams: Shawano, Ashwaubenon, Bay Port, De Pere, Green Bay Preble, Green Bay United, Pulaski
Shawano and Bay Port enter the field ranked as a team and stand a strong chance of getting multiple qualifiers to Sectionals while each of the other 4 teams all have at least one ranked wrestler coming into Regionals. Four of the classes have two ranked wrestlers which will lead to tougher roads for others to advance with only the top two moving on instead of four. Shawano Coach Mike Homan says the new format is going to leave some good wrestlers home next weekend.
“Keith Tourtilot finished 3rd in Regionals the first time he went to state, and if he was in this format, he is not going to state, so it is going to be tough, and with the kids that are coming in, it will be tough.”
Shawano finished unbeaten in conference duel meets and lost two late season duels to Marshfield and Slinger who are both ranked.
“You have got to be at your best, especially in this format, there is no room for error,” Homan said.

SECTIONAL B: REGIONAL 4 @ KAUKAUNA
Teams: Kaukauna, Appleton East, Appleton North, Appleton West, Hortonville, Kimberly, West De Pere
Kaukauna enters the field with 9 ranked wrestlers, including #1 ranked Greyson Clark at 126 pounds. Appleton North, Appleton West, Kimberly and West De Pere all have multiple ranked wrestlers and most of the weight classes have at least two ranked wrestlers.
“You could lose two times at Regionals and still qualify for Sectionals in the past, but now if you are intending to make it, you can’t lose a Regional Semifinal match, so you are going to have to be on and a loss could take you out of qualifying,” said Kaukauna Head Coach Jeff Matszak. “We are going to put our best 14 guys where they have been all year and we are going to just wrestle and try to get as many guys through to the Sectionals to give us the best chance to get our team to state next week.”
Kaukauna also has their eyes set on getting the chance to wrestle at another team state tournament, so to do that, Saturday is a big day.
“This is it, we have an opportunity that is far from perfect, but we will make the most of it.”
The top two wrestlers from each bracket will advance to Sectionals. Team scores at Sectionals will determine the top two teams that move on to the State Duel Tournament.

SECTIONAL B: REGIONAL 4 @ TWO RIVERS
Teams: Two Rivers, Brillion, Denmark, Freedom, Luxemburg-Casco, Sturgeon Bay, Wrightstown
In what may end up being the most competitive regional in northeast Wisconsin, Two Rivers is hosting five teams that are ranked in Division 2.
“From a fan perspective it will be a Regional with a lot of good matches to watch, but there are going to be a lot of really good kids that are not going to make it out.” Freedom Head Coach Justin Lancaster says that one of his concerns is that the teams in the Regional are going to beat up on each other where each time might end up with less kids moving onto Sectionals as some of the schools in the other Regionals.
Almost every weight class has at least three ranked wrestlers which means many ranked wrestlers will not even move on to Sectionals.
“We are pretty fortunate, we have gotten to wrestle every tough team around us so going in we feel prepared,” Lancaster said. “It is like a Conference Tournament but throw in Two Rivers and Brillion for fun.”
