SHAWANO, WI – With news of bars in Shawano County opening prior to the state ending the Safer At Home Order, Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber says he made a decision not to ticket or arrest Americans who are exercising their constitutional rights.
“Health Code orders should never encroach the Constitutional rights of the American people. The Bill of Rights was designed to protect against government overreach, and I have taken an Oath to defend our Constitution.”
Bieber went on to say that it is an Oath that he takes seriously.
“My Grandfather fought to defend this nation against the Nazi’s in WWII, my father fought against the communists in Vietnam, and I will fight to protect our Constitutional rights here at home. I will not infringe on the rights of Americans to “peaceably assemble” or prohibit the free exercise of religion, the right to travel.”
In his statement, the Sheriff says that also includes the ability for people to work.
“I believe that personal responsibility supersedes government intervention. Government leaders should not treat people as subjects but as Citizens and allow people to make decisions based on information provided to them. Citizens should be encouraged to take precautions for their own well-being but not be threatened with fines or imprisonment for doing normal activities that are constitutional.”
Bieber says he is not turning a blind-eye towards the dangers that health concerns cause, but said progress is being made with some of the concerns that the state has and the education that citizens are obtaining.
“Wisconsin has “flattened the curve”, hospitals are not being over-run, quite the opposite. We now know the most vulnerable to this virus are the elderly and those with pre-existing health issues. Those who have a greater risk should be advised to social distance and we should protect our nursing homes, said Bieber. “This is a virus and it will not just disappear. The flu has a vaccine and still kills 50k-70k annually. We must continue with our life, make choices based on our own circumstances, but never give up our rights.”
Comments made on social media as well as calls into the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department over the past five days indicate that some bars in the count have been allowing people inside and have been opening back up for more than just carryout and curbside pickup.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department has received multiple calls from citizens notifying them of multiple vehicles in a parking lot and reporting that some places are open. No citations or arrests have been reported as a response.
Some bar business owners reported over the weekend that a meeting was held last week to discuss the process of opening back up.
