The American Legion Department of Wisconsin has canceled its programming of American Legion Baseball statewide for the 2020 season.
The recommendation was made by the Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Association Board of Directors on May 6. The Department Executive Committee made the final decision on May 9, marking the first time since 1927 the Department of Wisconsin will not crown an American Legion Baseball champion.
Wisconsin joins 23 other states that have canceled its American Legion Baseball program this year.
“Everyone involved in our program hoped to have American Legion Baseball in 2020, but this was a necessary decision,” said Roger Mathison, Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Commissioner.
Mathison says the factors that they took into consideration included the health of the players, coaches, umpires, fans, parents and volunteers involved. Other factors included facility availability, travel concerns, and the uncertianity of when sports will be able to begin.
The Legion Baseball All-Star game in August has also been canceled. State Tournaments were scheduled for AAA-Sheboygan, AA-Fort Atkinson, A-Viroqua, and Junior Legion 17-U- Plover and 16-U Lomira-Thersea.
