MANAWA, WI -Burning restrictions in the city of Manawa have been lifted. Mayor John Smith says he and Fire Chief Robert Rosenau have decided to allow burning starting in May.
“We followed the DNR’s restrictions for the month of April, but for May, we felt we should lift it so people can get their yards clean for summer.”
Smith says there are residents who do not easily have access to get their spring yard waste to the dump so they burn it. He says if it were still dangerous to burn, they would have left the restrictions in place, but they were originally put in place for a different reason.
“This is burn ban is not because it is dry, it was put in place because of COVID-19.”
Mayor Smith says like anything, when burning in the city limits, people should use common sense and courtesy.
“In the city we have open burn so people can clean up their yard waste which typically does not lead to house fires. We have guidelines in the city for burning so we are not burning big brush piles like you may find out in the townships.”
He says on a windy day they prefer people don’t burn. He says residents should burn clean wood and make sure the smoke does not bother the neighbors.
“It is just common courtesy. A little bit of common sense goes a long ways.”
Open burning is prohibited but outdoor cooking over a fire contained in a device or structure designed for such is permissible.
