SHAWANO, WI – The only candidate that is on the ballot for Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court Judge in April is withdrawing from the election.
Shawano County Corporation Counsel Tony Kordus is citing that his decision is based on personal reasons.
Shawano County Clerk Pam Schmidt says the race is complicated now.
She says the only way that a write-in candidate can win an election is if their name is written more times than the listed candidate’s box is checked. She says that is always a long shot, and that may be more unlikely because over 1,000 absentee ballots were already cast before Kordus withdrew. She says those who voted already did not, however, waste a vote.
“Voters can request to get their ballot back from the clerk so that they can vote on a new ballot.”
She says that will have to be done by the Thursday before election day.
Meanwhile, Kordus was listed as endorsing another candidate Jeff Haase in a recent posting.
Another candidate, Elisabeth Stockbridge has declared herself a write-in candidate.
If Kordus would get more votes, and still wishes to withdraw, he would then have to decline the nomination , and then the outcome is in the State’s hands.
“The Governor would have to appoint someone.”
It is not clear exactly how that would look if it came down to it.
The seat is for Brach 1 which is currently held by Judge James Habeck.
