SHAWANO, WI – Shawano County is making improvements when it comes to fighting drugs in the 2019.
“We had zero overdose deaths in Shawano County last year,” said Shawano County Sheriff Adam Bieber.
Bieber attributes that to increased enforcement as well as different drug use in the county.
“In 2018 we had eight overdose deaths and a lot of that was from heroin and fentanyl and we did not see hardly any heroin or fentanyl in 2019.”
In 2019, Sheriff Bieber says they dealt mostly with methamphetamine.
“It doesn’t mean people stopped doing drugs, they are just using different types of drugs, but it is a big change from the year before.”
In 2019 officers continued to work on education when it came to drug use. They also had a pretty active year.
“We were successful with a few drug busts, so we feel we may have taken out some of the major dealers,” Bieber explained.. “We have really had success with some of the drug detectives and some of the drug cases.”
He says as they tackle 2020, Shawano County is starting to get a reputation.
“We are known as a county that will do a lot of traffic stops and if we get a lot of drugs doing that, some dealers might not come to our county.”
