WAUPACA, WI – Waupaca Water Utility says frozen pipes can be a serious problem this time of year.
Frozen pipes can be detected by unusually cold water temperatures, low water pressure, discolored water coming out of the fixtures and a sputtering sound when first running water.
Water utility professionals say thawing pipes can be done by hot air from a hair dryer or an appropriate space heater, but open flames should never be used.
It is also important to shut off the water at the main shut off when you are going to be out of town for a lengthy period of time.
