CLINTONVILLE, WI – Clintonville 4K teacher Michelle Lewis spent the first day of her Christmas break delivering a special gift to a man who she never met.
“I felt like God put in on my heart that I had to do something, I could not stop thinking about him, she said. “It was so worth it.”
Michelle Lewis saw that a man named Gene was battling terminal cancer and the man’s son was requesting people to send his dad Christmas cards to brighten his spirits for the holidays.
Lewis did that in a big way, delivering 16 cards to his home in Prairie Du Sac, one for each letter of the phrase Merry Christmas that every grade in the Clintonville School District had a part in.
She got every grade in the district to complete and sign a letter card to spell out the phrase Merry Christmas.
“They could decorate it, the kids were involved, sign it, write a little message,” Lewis said. “The students 4K through 12 grade were given one letter to decorate how they want as a class.”
With the help of Public Works and the Fire Department in Praire Du Sac, the card was presented for Gene and his family.
“They held the sign and I rang the doorbell. His wife came to the door and they video taped it for him.”
Lewis says his story hit close to home for her.
“I lost my mom to cancer the day after Christmas in 2005. I just wanted to do something to help uplift his spirits.”
She said she was told that Gene received over 25,000 cards from all over.
