WAUKESHA, WI – Multiple media outlets are reporting shots fire inside Waukesha South High School.
A heavy police presence was reported and the school district has confirmed that shots were fired.
“The suspect would not remove his hands from his pocket and continued to ignore officers commands. The suspect removed a handgun from his waistband and pointed it at officers,” Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack explained. “The officer was forced to discharge his firearm, striking the suspect.”
Police say it was a student and a school resource officer who exchanged gunfire. Chief Jack says the shooting happened just before 10 a.m.
“A firearm was recovered. The suspect is a 17-year-old male. He was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.
The shooter is in custody according to police.
Chief Jack says nobody else was injured.
One student said a drill was already underway Monday morning.
“We were sitting against the wall like normal and we kind of heard it and started discussing that it was real and it really made us scared.”
The High School and nearby Whittier Elementary School were on lockdown.
The district has decided to release the students early.
