Marvel M. Korth, age 98 of Shawano, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2019, at The Cottages Memory Care Unit.
Marvel was born on May 25, 1921 in Shawano to the late Edward and Hilda (Johnson) Zingler. She was baptized and confirmed at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Marvel attended school in Shawano, graduating from Shawano High School. Following high school, she attended Green Bay Business College where she lived with a family and provided childcare. On December 25, 1942, Marvel was united in marriage to Willie Korth of Cecil at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Shortly after their marriage, the couple settled in Algoma, Wisconsin where they worked and raised two children. Marvel worked for Ropson Motor Sales, Algoma Wood Industries, and Harmann Studios. She and her husband served many people from the Algoma area when they started the H&R Block business.
As many do after retirement, the couple moved back to their birthplace, Shawano. Marvel became an active member and secretary of Tabitha Society, and did other volunteer work at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. She was also a volunteer with Hospice and worked on the election board for 20 years. Marvel was an avid Packer fan and never missed watching a game in her Packer attire. The couple shared 58 years of marriage before Willie’s death on February 14, 2001.
A highlight of her later years while living in Shawano was a tour of her parents’ homestead. Although the house had been remodeled, Marvel was able to tell the owner exactly how the house was when she grew up there over 90 years ago. Even in her elderly years, Marvel never missed the opportunity to send birthday cards to all of her relatives, at least 28 a year to her immediate family, and that’s not including her friends! If anyone in her family needed to know a birthdate, Marvel would have it in her little book. Those cards will be missed along with many conversations.
Left to cherish Marvel’s memory is her son, Karl (Cheryl) Korth of Cottage Grove, WI. She was blessed with six granddaughters, Tammy (Dana) Collins, Debbie (John) Delabarre, Diane (Troy) Maltby, Nicole (John) Otterson, Krista (Craig) Dopf, and Kimberly (Nathaniel) Wagner; thirteen great-grandchildren; her sister, Isabelle Whaley; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Betty Korth; her sister, Margaret (Hilbert) Berkhahn; her brother Walter (Lenore) Zingler; her sister-in-law, Luella Krake; and brothers-in-law, Robert Whaley, and Russell Krake.
A funeral service for Marvel M. Korth will take place on Friday, October 18, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. Pastor Steve Schauder will officiate. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice or St. James Lutheran Church in Marvel’s name.
