The National Weather Service has confirmed nine tornadoes touched the ground Saturday in Wisconsin. Thousands of people are still without electrical service. Four of the twisters touched down near Shawano, with two in Trempealeau County and two confirmed near Wausau and Rhinelander.
Some of those include an EF-1 near New London on Saturday.
NWS says an EF-1 tornado was recorded Hortonville with winds reaching 90 miles per hour.
An EF-0 tornado was recorded in Greenville. Winds reached 85 miles per hour.
An EF-0 tornado hit Wrightstown and damaged a barn.
All nine tornadoes were confirmed within a 24-hour time period. A tornado was confirmed to have destroyed a barn in the Town of Knowlton, near Wittenberg, in Marathon County.
Shawano Emergency Management Director James Davel said here in Shawano County, we got lucky:
Radar indicated a tornado rotation in rural northeastern Waupaca County near Clintonville about 9:15 p.m. Funnel clouds were also reported outside of Freedom, Black Creek, between Weyauwega and Waupaca, near Dale, and just outside of Appleton. Langlade and Oconto Counties saw widespread damage, where wind gusts reached 80 mph.
Davel says local crews will be helping their neighbors to the north with cleanup:
Ping pong ball size hail was reported in several northern counties
Wind gusts of 50 mph were reported at Green Bay’s Austin Straubel International Airport, and winds reached 52 mph at Oshkosh’s Wittman Regional Airport.
