The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office is the latest agency in our area to have its name used in a scam. The sheriff’s office says it received a number of complaints about an impersonator claiming to be “Deputy Jacobs” threatening them with arrest. Deputy Jacobs claims the intended victim has a federal warrant. First, the victim is asked to come to the courthouse — but then offers to settle the warrant by accepting a payment over the phone, even at a “reduced fine” or fee. Arrest warrants aren’t settled that way, and the sheriff’s office says it would never request a payment like this over the phone. Hang up on these calls. Do not engage the caller. Similar scams threaten intended victims with arrest for failing to appear for jury duty or owing income taxes, or threaten the victim with deportation.
