With emergency communications reaching crisis mode due to the lack of space, Marathon County officials are considering the drastic step of closing the youth detention center. Those officials say the overcrowding of the communications system is slowing first responders in receiving emergency calls. The detention facility costs 700-thousand dollars-a-year to operate and it usually holds only a half-dozen kids at a time, many from other jurisdictions.
