The U.S. department of justice is offering grants of nearly 2.9 millon dollars to start a public defender program and hire, train, and equip a conservation warden for the Menominee Nation. A three-year, $748,722 grant will establish the tribe’s Public Defender’s Office with the hiring of a lead attorney who will begin taking cases by mid-to-late 2019. A second attorney will be hired in a year to increase the office’s caseload. Unlike in state court, there are no public defenders available to work in tribal court.
