Wedged between a video’s solemn introduction and a poignant finale are just over three minutes of hi-jinks by Oconto police officers and firefighters. After grieving the death of a colleague for weeks, that’s just what they needed. Oconto’s contribution to the viral Lip Sync Challenge, which this summer has been accepted by police departments across the country, paid tribute to Erek Belongia, who passed away unexpectedly June 28 at age 33.In the video, members of each department reversed roles and performed all sorts of antics to the song “Everyday Superhero” by Smash Mouth. It was a fitting nod to Belongia, who served as a paid on-call fireman for seven years, but quit last year to focus on his job with the police force, which he joined full time in 2012. Firefighters found old police hats and aviator sunglasses to wear, and in one scene, used a radar gun. Officers use a fire house and the ladder truck, among other things, as props.
