The Outagamie County Parks Department’s proposal to change the name of Mosquito Hill Nature Center to Wolf Peak Nature Park is drawing plenty of criticism from current and former county residents who say the Mosquito Hill name has deep historical connections to the region. The parks department had asked the Friends of Mosquito Hill board earlier this year to consider a name change as part of a rebranding effort for the 430-acre nature center whose history dates back to the mid-1970s. Two different votes took place at the annual Friends of Mosquito Hill meeting, the first to consider a name change and the second to decide whether the name should be changed to Wolf Peak Nature Park or Wolf River Nature Park. The vote to consider a name change passed 20-14. Wolf Peak Nature Park then won over Wolf River Nature Park on a 19-5 vote, with several members suggesting other options. Only 34 of the 208 Friends of Mosquito Hill members took part in the vote. Some members have since complained that there was short notice given to when the votes would take place, resulting in low turnout.
