An Oconto Falls woman claims in a federal lawsuit that police departments in Oconto and Oconto Falls violated the Americans With Disabilities Act by not providing a sign language interpreter during encounters with her. The plaintiff Renee Lange, a deaf individual whose primary means of communication is American Sign Language. The lawsuit further claims the agencies don’t have sufficient policies and procedures in place to ensure effective communication with deaf persons. The Oconto area police continued to misunderstand and book Lange for “not cooperating” despite the disability on five separate occasions. Lange seeks compensatory damages under the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act.
