The city of Oconto is set to pay its local paper $3,000 to settle a lawsuit. The lawsuit happened because the city refused last month to divulge the names of the finalist for its police chief job. The city admits to no wrongdoing but it will pay out thanks to the League of Wisconsin Municipalities Mutual Insurance which is the insurance carrier for the city. The reporter under the Wisconsin Open Records Law asked about information on the candidates but the city officials refused to identify them and the paper took suit. Within a few hours of the suit being filed the city released the information.
