A Bowler man is facing multiple felony charges in connection with the armed robbery of a gas station in the village of Mattoon. Jay Hill, 34, has been charged with felony counts of armed robbery, possession of methamphetamine and three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Hill is accused of holding up Donna’s Village Pump, 1203 Fourth St., in Mattoon, at gunpoint on March 6. Hill allegedly burst into the station around 8:30 p.m. with a shotgun and demanded money from the till and the safe, fleeing with about $1,500 and two cartons of cigarettes. He was wearing a ski mask and stuffed the money drawer from the till and a cash box from the safe into a duffel bag, the complaint states. Hill could face a maximum 40 years in prison and a $100,000 fine for armed robbery if convicted, as well as 10 years and a $25,000 fine for each of the felon in possession of a firearm charges, and 3½ years and a $10,000 fine for possession of methamphetamine. Hill is currently being held on a $5,000 cash bond at Marathon County Jail on a felony charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He’s due for a pre-trial conference there on April 6. There is no court date yet set on the Shawano County charges.
