The man at the center of a lengthy police standoff in Oconto County last weekend was officially charged in Oconto County Circuit Court. Thomas S. Benser, 50, of Lena, who faces a litany of charges including five counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Benser is accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend and four police officers over a period of two days, which entailed a 10-hour standoff that caused a major highway to be shut down. In addition to the attempted homicide charges, Benser also is charged with five counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and single counts of strangulation and suffocation, battery, disorderly conduct and failing to comply with a police officer. Benser is being held in the Oconto County Jail on a $500,000 cash bond.
