The Suring School District is holding the 9th Consecutive Military Night at tonight’s varsity basketball game.
The idea to honor service members in the late winter came when former basketball coach Gary Regal challenged to his team to do a service project. Suring Athletic Director Heidi Gerndt says things soon fell into place.
“We had a man named Ron Christensen who was a graduate of Suring and a life as a marine,” Gerndt said. “He was a life in the marines and came back and now works in our community and had three sons and they just thought a good service project would be a military night.”
Gerndt says the event receives an overwhelming amount of support from residents and businesses in the community. She’s expecting a crowd of more than 400 people, and they’re even bringing in a US Flag that will cover the basketball court before the game.
All proceeds for the event will be donated to the Oconto County Veterans Emergency Relief Fund.
