The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office says there is no longer a threat to the public safety at The Boulder Lake Campground and hopes the National Forest Service will reverse a previous decision that closed it for the 2018 season.
On Wednesday, authorities confirmed that the closure was due to a property owner holding target practice near the vicinity of the the Boulder Lake Camp.
Oconto County Sheriff’s Office says that threat is now stable after going through court proceedings.
FOX 11 News reported that the property owner was ordered to go to a mental health facility for at least six months of treatment. The ruling also suspended the man’s right to possess firearms. This will result in any weapons being turned over to the sheriff’s department. Oconto County Sheriff Deputy Ed Janke said the man could petition to have those rights restored.
U.S. Forest Service staff has not yet announced if the campground will re-open following the latest developments.
