A Sheboygan County judge has rejected Steven Avery’s request for a new trial. The 55-year-old Avery has been in prison for almost 11 years after a jury convicted him in the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. Avery’s attorney, Kathleen Zellner, asked for a new trial saying new technology would prove his innocence and the conviction was based on planted evidence and false testimony. Brendan Dassey, Avery’s nephew, remains in prison while the state appeals a federal court decision that overturned his murder conviction. The case gained international attention after the release of the Netflix series “Making a Murderer.”
