At the latest New London Police and Fire Commission meeting, officers in the New London Police Department have been approved to carry Naloxone, or Narcan, an opioid reversal drug.
The drug works to reverse the process of an opioid overdose by countering its effects and replacing the opioids from opiate receptors in the brain.
Administrating the drug will cost about $50 per dose and an initial purchase will be made for 10 doses. By allowing officers to carry the drug, it will save crucial minutes if officers respond faster than a paramedic response.
Other police departments in Hortonville and Weyauwega also allow their officers to carry Narcan.
