WIAA Baseball Regionals Kick Off With Exciting Finishes
Division 2
Senior Pitcher Stays Strong In Final Game
Peshtigo 3, Shawano 2 (F/8)
Shawano received another stellar start on the mound from Dylan Sumnicht and even held a one run lead in the 10th inning, but fell to Peshtigo 3-2 in the regional quarterfinals. Sumnicht threw 9 1/3 innings, while scattering six hits, recording eight strikeouts, and allowing only one earned run. Shawano struck first in the sixth inning when Kien Moorman doubled home Alex Hoffman with two outs. The lead wouldn’t last a full inning, as Peshtigo would tie things up in the home half. In the 10th, Hoffman laid down a sacrifice bunt, which would score Moorman all the way from first after a throwing error. But Peshtigo would answer again in extras. Sumnicht reached his pitch limit after the first batter reached on an error. The Bulldogs loaded the bases against Cole Nelson, who ultimately surrendered the walk-off hit to Riley Reif. Head coach Rob Wolff said after the game, sometimes you just have to credit the other team.
“You’ve got to tip your hats to them. They’re down, pressures on them. They put the pressure on us, put the ball in play” said Wolf. “We didn’t make the plays, routine plays that should have been made and that cost us the ballgame.”
Coach Wolff had nothing but praise about his starter’s final game, a player that the baseball program in Shawano will miss greatly.
“Senior that goes 9 1/3 innings, hats off. That’s the way he’s been for me all year. The most runs he’s ever given up is three. Every team he pitched against in the bay it was a close game. It was always low scoring, we always had a chance to win. He’s going to be missed.”
Lack off offensive production was costly to Shawano. The loss is the Hawks 10th loss this season in which they scored two runs or fewer. Shawano only scored more than two runs.
