Allen (Al) Edward Wendt of New London traveled to his heavenly home on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at the age of 66. Al’s family enveloped him in love and light as he made his final journey.
Al was born in Appleton on June 20, 1950 to June (Uhl) and Edward Wendt. After losing his mom at the tender age of two, Al’s dad remarried and gave him nine siblings – three brothers and six sisters. They lived in Readfield for six years before moving to Sugar Bush in 1968. Al helped his dad on his farm, Ed Wendt & Sons Hogs Unlimited Inc., while also working full time at Hillshire Farm, where he worked for 43 years before retiring in 2013.
Al met the love of his life, Diane Zitske, in 1969. When Diane took a cross country trip with a friend, Al decided he couldn’t live without her and proposed marriage as soon as she returned. Al and Diane were married at Grace Lutheran Church in Bear Creek on July 17, 1971. They enjoyed more than 45 years of love and laughter, with some tears mixed in. They loved going to Packers games and NASCAR races, and watching them on TV; fishing; watching movies; raising German Shepherd and Golden Retriever puppies; going to classic car shows and flea markets; dancing and snowmobiling (in their younger days); and especially spending time with family and friends.
Al and Diane had two children, Stacey and Lucas (Luke). Al’s strength and values live on in his kids. He gave Stacey his smile and his passion for news and current events, and they shared a love of music. To Luke he gave his work ethic and his sense of humor, and he taught Luke everything he knows.
Al was whip-smart, exceptionally creative and had an extremely kind and loving heart. Nothing was more important to him than the people he loved – especially his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Al is survived by his wife, Diane; his daughter and son-in-law, Stacey and Steve Kaisler; his son and “daughter-in-law”, Luke Wendt and Wendy Miller; his siblings and in-laws: Maryalee Wendt and Ken Young; Matthew Wendt; Joanne Williams; Gene and Kathy Wendt; James Wendt and Laurie Young; Rose and Randy Schuelke; Sandra Wendt; Patricia Wendt; and Brenda and Chuck Green; 10 nieces and nephews; one great-nephew and four great-nieces; dozens of friends; and his faithful four-legged companions, Petey and Cooper. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Grace (Stage) Wendt; a nephew, Joelazurus Williams; his father-in-law, Leon Zitske; and a brother-in-law, Darrell Zitske.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 2nd at 11:00 AM at Grace Lutheran Church – Sugar Bush, E9680 Church St., New London. Rev. Preston Heuer will officiate and burial will be at Maple Creek Cemetery, New London. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the Beil-Didier Funeral Home, 299 S. Main St., Clintonville, and on Thursday from 10:00 AM until time of service at the church.
Al’s family would like to thank Drs. Ari Bar Lev, William Conkright and Scott Kolbeck, and his “angels” Amy Hein and Jenny Schaumburg from Fox Valley Oncology and Hematology for the compassionate care they provided for Al during the past five and a half years. They are more than nurses – they are family.
