The Kaukauna City Council voted Tuesday night to approve an ordinance to give certain minors tickets instead of criminal charges for sexting. The ordinance allows police to issue citations to those younger than 18 who share explicit messages and photos, as long as there’s no indication of peer pressure or threats.
Kaukauna Assistant Police Chief Jamie Graff says prosecutors could otherwise give those teens felony charges for child pornogrpahy, and it’s not appropriate for kids who simply make “poor choices.”
Kaukauna Mayor Gene Rosin, school district leaders, and the Kaukauna Police Dpeartment said they backed the measure.
