West Salem Wins State Title Behind Another Solid Pitching Performance
West Salem used two big innings and the pitching of a deep rotation to top Clintonville 10-3 to win the Class A State Legion Baseball Championship in Clintonville on Sunday, finishing the tournament 5-0.
Ryan Beirne went the distance for West Salem, giving up eight hits while striking out seven. West Salem opened the game with one run on a Trevor Kastenschmidt single. Clintonville answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, one driven in by Kolton Kluth, who was named to the All-Tournament team for his week at the plate and one solid pitching performance.
Tournament MVP and Batting Champion Alex Jeranek drove in two runs with a double in the three run third inning for West De Pere, as they took a 4-2 lead. Clintonville scored one more run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly out to cut the lead to 4-3, but that would be as close as they would get. West Salem put the bats on the ball in the seventh inning, scoring five runs to put the game away.
The game did have a false ending as West Salem nearly turned a game ending double play on a ground out to third to end the game, but the first base umpire called Clintonville safe at first. West Salem thought the game was over and rushed the field. After a discussion, the field was cleared and Clintonville ended the game with a base hit and a fly out.
