Iola-Scandinavia scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and had no problems in defeating Racine Lutheran 43-14 to claim the school’s first-ever state championship This year’s Division 6 crown is the first title for the T-Birds after three previous runner-up finishes.
Senior running back Bryce Huettner, who set the state’s all-time career rushing record last week, pounded away with 32 carries for 156 yards and three touchdowns.
It was Huettner who opened the scoring, plunging in from a yard out on the team’s first drive.
Alex Sharp added a nine-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter. A 21-yard touchdown pass from Connor Kurki to William Cady and a 29-yard scoring play from Connor Kurk to Carter Kurki gave Iola-Scandinavia a 29-0 halftime lead.
Huettner would add a couple more short touchdowns in the second half, and his eight-yard run with 6:47 left in the game set the running clock in motion.
Iola-Scandinavia finished with 386 yards of total offense in the game, with 282 coming on the ground.
Iola-Scandinavia takes home a gold ball after finishing as runner-up in 1999, 2007, and 2017.
