The Department of Natural Resources is considering a walleye bag limit reduction on the Lake Winnebago system. DNR fisheries biologist Adam Nickel told the crowd of over 160 outdoor enthusiasts at New London’s Mosquito Hill Nature Center. Nickel says the system’s walleye reproduction has been inconsistent over the past decade, despite good classes in 2011, 2013, and 2016. He pointed to trawling surveys showing a lack of a spike from the 2011 class, and a higher exploitation rate throughout the system. At one point in the presentation Nickel referred to the reproduction over the past decade as either “boom or bust”. And he said this year’s low water levels could mean a poor spawning year, unless spring rain and snow bring the system back up.
