Waupaca County is the 28th Wisconsin county join a federal suit against numerous pharmaceutical companies to recoup compensation for the millions dollars they say are being spent in response to the opioid epidemic. In the 74 page complaint filed in federal court last week, the county wrote that from 2013 to 2015, six people died of opioid overdose. In 2016 Waupaca County had 230 hospital encounters related to opioids. The lawsuit accuses the pharmaceutical companies use a “nefarious and deceptive” marketing campaign that results in an addiction to painkillers which can then lead to a heroin problem.
