Estimated $4k In Damage
The Shawano Area Food Center was burglarized twice in the last three days. The building on East Center Street in Shawano was first broken into on Sunday night. Shawano Police Chief Dan Mauel said a second act of vandalism was reported Tuesday afternoon.
“Whoever went in there did a significant amount of damage” Chief Mauel said. “Nothing was stolen but over $4,000 dollars worth of damage was reported.” Mauel said no further damage was noticed from Tuesday’s break-in.
“From when workers left until they came back later that afternoon about three hours later, they could tell somebody was in there.”
Doors, walls and coolers were damaged according to the report. On Tuesday, the report indicated that the tow motor was moved and every door was left wide open.
“There is a significant amount of damage” Mauel said. “They took a tow motor and ran it into a lot of things, and one of the coolers was damaged pretty bad.”
Mauel said this type of damage is a felony offense.
“It is burglary and felony criminal damage to property. “You only need to go in with the intent of committing a theft or a felony” Mauel said. “You have to try to do that kind of damage, so there is intent there. This is significant amount of damage and it seems they were in their for quite a while” he added.
As of Tuesday, the Food Center was still open.
