Harvey “Mookie” Marotz, age 91, of Shawano, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. Harvey was born on November 29, 1925 in Shawano, son of the late Herman and Hilda (Winkler) Marotz. Harvey graduated from Shawano High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United Sates Army Air Corps, reporting for duty on his 18th birthday. He served for two years before being honorably discharged when the war ended. He was a proud member of the Shawano American Legion Post #117 for 73 years. On December 2, 1950, Harvey was united in marriage to Mary Jahnke at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Mary preceded him in death on November 7, 2006. Together Harvey and Mary raised three sons, Scott, Steve and Stuart. During Harvey’s younger years, he spent a lot of time at the local bowling alleys. Bowling was his favorite sport and he had been bowling since he was a junior in high school. He bowled in 25 national tournaments and was the secretary for major league bowling in Shawano for 30 years and secretary of the Wisconsin Valley Bowling Association for 20 years. He bowled six 700 series and in 1984 was inducted into the Shawano Bowling Hall of Fame. Besides bowling, baseball took up much of Harvey’s free time. For 20 years he was the director of the Shawano American Legion team and the manager for 10 years. He was the state director for American Legion baseball for 25 years and was also involved with Little League Baseball. He enjoyed working with the boys on the teams and recalled it as a pleasant experience. Harvey also enjoyed cooking, fishing, golfing and hunting. He hunted for over 61 years only missing one year in 1944 while he was in the service. A wonderful man, Harvey will be missed by his family and friends.
Harvey is survived by his three sons, Scott (Kathy Broder) Marotz of Green Bay, Steve (Terri) Marotz of Shawano and Stuart (Meri) Marotz of Shawano; five grandchildren, Kyle Marotz, Jay Marotz, Tyler Marotz, Hailey (Shawn) Vandermause and Megan Marotz; one great-grandson, Jonathon David Marotz; his sister-in-law, Alice Marotz as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Harvey was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; his parents; and two brothers, Herbert Marotz and Robert G. Marotz.
Funeral services for Harvey will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, September 29, 2017 at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano with Rev. Mark Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery. Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #117. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Swedberg Funeral Home in Shawano from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and again at the church on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of the service.
