With this weekend being another youth baseball and softball tournament in Memorial Park, the Shawano Police Department is urging motorists to be cautious when driving through, given the addition presence of children and families. Shawano Police Chief Dan Mauel says motorists need to be aware.
“You need to treat those as 15 mph zones,” Chief Mauel said at the Shawano Common Council meeting. “Even though we can’t sign a lot of the areas at 15 mph, when there’s kids around you have to be really careful. I went through there on Elizabeth Street this weekend and there was a lot of people there for those tournaments and kids on both sides of the road.”
Shawano Mayor Jeanne Cronce even suggested a heavier police focus ensuring people are driving safely though the area.
“Maybe we can have a little more drive-bys on Friday night and Saturday because there is going to be another big tournament there at Memorial Park this weekend,” she said.
