A few area Boy Scouts are set to embark on a trip they’ll never forget. Members of Troop B2209 will be traveling to the 2017 National Jamboree at the Bechtel Summit Scouting Reservation in West Virginia.
The jamboree attracts about 40,000 scouters from around the United States and even internationally. Tyler Thiel, one of the scouts making the trip from Shawano, says it’s not something every scout has an opportunity to do.
“You have to be first-class and you have to have your Scout Master in your own troop approve your application,” he said.
The Trip occurs just once every four years and Thiel says he’s getting the chance to go on the trip is a great honor.
“There’s thousands upon thousands of scouts and every handful, maybe one or two of them, will be able to go this in their lifetime. I think it’s an honor that I’m able to go to this.”
Thiel hopes to develop new leadership skills that he’ll be able to bring back with him, along with getting the chance to have a little fun with the many activities ongoing.
“Everything from rifle ranges, to shotgun ranges, to whitewater rafting, to scuba diving, zip lines and different activities.”
The National Jamboree runs from July 18-27 and includes a trip around the Nation’s Capital in Washington D.C.
