Clintonville Avenges Only Loss To Take Clipper Invite
Clintonville 2, New London 0
In the championship game of the Clipper Invitational, the Diamondcats faced off against the host team, New London. This was the third meeting of the season between these two teams. Early in the year, New London beat Clintonville as they rested some players late in the game but felt like they could compete with and beat New London. The second meeting came earlier in this tournament. New London jumped out to a quick lead and Clintonville battled back to a tie in the sixth before New London scored 5 in the top of the seventh that included a few whacky plays to win 9-4. So, in the third game Clintonville wanted to get its revenge. Hunter Vollmer threw lights out on the mound for the second straight outing to lead Clintonville to a 2-0 win to clinch first place in the Clipper Invitational.
The Cats got an RBI hit from Josh Schroeder in the second inning to get an early lead. They added the second run in the sixth inning after Vollmer reached base on a passed ball strikeout, Jordan Koeppen bunted him over and then Nathan Krueger hit an RBI single to score Vollmer.
That is all the scoring that was needed for Clintonville, as Vollmer only allowed two hits in the game to shut the New London offense down. Vollmer had all three pitches working and kept New London guessing the entire game. Logan Locy took the tough loss as he went the complete game allowing the two runs on just four hits. The difference in the game was that Clintonville was able to get the clutch hit when they needed it. Wolfe and Hanson both reached base twice to lead New London.
