After spending two months as Interim Police Chief, Dan Mauel was given an official nod of approval to remove Interim from his title. He will become the new Police Chief in Shawano.
“We are pleased to announce that Dan Mauel has been appointed Chief of Police for the city of Shawano,” Shawano Mayor Jeanne Cronce said in a statement that she released Wednesday.
The vote came after a closed session discussion. Tony Zielinski, Police and Fire Commission President, said the Commission felt he was more than qualified.
“He has demonstrated the ability to lead this department professionally, and in a smooth and positive transition,” Zielinski said of Mauel. “The Police and Fire Commission is very proud to promote from within, which is a reflection of potential future advancements with the Shawano P.D. If we thought for one second that the talent did not exist internally, we would have looked outside,” Zielinski added. “We have a very talented Police and Fire Department, and we are prepared to promote from within whenever possible.”
Mauel has been with the Shawano Police Department for 32 years and in law enforcement for 37 years. In his time, he has served as a patrol officer and lieutenant. The newly named Chief received his Associates Degree in Police Science from NWTC and his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration. Mauel was named Interim Police Chief in April of this year.
Mauel has an Associate Degree in Police Science from NWTC and holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice Administration which he obtained in 2006.
