Fourth of July weekend marks the busiest boating weekend in Wisconsin. As thousands of people will taking to the Wisconsin waters over the holiday, they may be bringing along some unwanted guests to the docks. The 9th annual Landing Blitz will take place this weekend as a statewide effort to remind boaters and water lovers to take action to stop the spread of aquatic invasive species. Volunteer inspectors will be at landings through Tuesday, giving demonstrations on the prevention steps for invasive species. Boaters are encouraged to share the message through social media by hashtag #CleanBoatsCleanWaters. Examples of these species are Eurasian watermilfoil, spiny water fleas and zebra muscles. These species hitch on to the bottom of boats and other equipment. DNR Officials say by inspecting and removing all attached plants and animals, draining all water from boats, disposing of unwanted bait by placing it in the trash and buying your bait, it can help prevent the invasions.
