Softball Regional Semi-Finals Scoreboard
Division 5
Marion 3, Gresham 2
The 7-seeded Marion Mustangs had a good feeling coming into Wednesday’s regional semi-final contest with Gresham. Having defeated the Wildcats 15-5 in the final game of the regular season–albeit against Gresham’s number two pitcher–it gave the team reason to believe they could pull off the upset. The Mustangs raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Abby Polzin singled home Skylla Szczerbak; Polzin would come around to score later that inning. Gresham wouldn’t push across their first runs until the sixth inning when Dani Huntington and Hailey Hoffman scored off of defensive miscues by Marion. The Mustangs remained unfazed and managed to retake the lead on an RBI single from Amiya Peterson to score Polzin.
“They still had their confidence,” Marion head coach Jenny Korth said about her team after surrendering the lead. “That’s something that we say we do, but they kept it. There was more fire in their eyes when we came to the batter’s box in that seventh inning. There was something about the way they looked, that I just knew, and with those couple of singles right off the bat I knew that we would be in good shape.”
After a lead-off single and strikeout in the home half of the seventh, Marion turned in a critical defensive play when Tessa Brei received a relay throw from the outfield and caught Tiana Ferguson in between second and third for the second out, the kind of heads-up defensive play that coach Korth preaches to her team.
“Just play our defense, look the ball in, throw the ball,” Korth told her team before the bottom of the seventh. “That was a freshman for us that made that play. To be heads up and realize what to do as a freshman, instead of just standing there looking around. That was a phenomenal job on her part.”
Marion now plays at St. Thomas Aquinas/Lena on Friday for the regional crown.
