A traveling basketball coach who has been charged with Child Enticement and Use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, made a guilty plea in Shawano County Court Tuesday. 25-year old Nicholas Bennett was originally charged with over 200 counts of child pornography along with the sex crimes against children. In February, the courts dismissed over 200 counts of child pornography charges filed against Bennett, due to how the images were obtained by Shawano County Investigators, according to court documents. Bennett was arrested back in 2015 for arranging a sexual encounter with whom he believed to be a 13-year old boy that he met when his traveling basketball camp arrived in Shawano. The complaint stated that Bennett’s conversations through text messages were intercepted by the boy’s mother, who then turned the phone over to Shawano County Law Enforcement. Members of the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department posed as the 13-year old and started engaging in sexually explicit text messages, which eventually led plans to meet a hotel in Shawano. When Bennett arrived, he was taken into custody. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June.
