For just the second time, Shawano Alderperson Bob Kurkiewicz faced opposition for his District 1 seat on the Shawano Common Council. Kurkiewicz has served 14 years to the city and was challenged this election by Jessica Van Buren. Kurkiewicz held on by a 162-103 margin and shared that he was grateful for the support from those who voted for him this race
“I feel blessed that people supported me and have confidence in me, so I want to reach out to Jessica Van Buren” said Kurkiewicz. “Hopefully she will share with me some of the things she felt were important in the campaign and hopefully I can follow through on some of her suggestions.”
Kurkiewicz added that this will be a busy next term that he will serve, with a couple of looming issues that the council will have to address.
“Certainly the park referendum was a big challenge this time. The people have indicated they want us to go forward with that” Kurkiewicz said. “We have two key positions that we have to replace. The retirement of our police chief is a big issue and the pending retirement of Nancy Schauer, our financial director at the utilities.”
Krukiewicz was the only alderperson in Shawano to face opposition.
