The city of Shawano is encouraging residents to be mindful in ensuring their house numbers are visible. Shawano Mayor Jeanne Cronce says in speaking with Shawano Police Officers, often times at night they’re unable to find the location of a call because house numbers are not visible, or not even displayed at all.
“If you notice your house number is not very visible, please consider fixing that” said Cronce. “If the police department, ambulance crew or fire department cannot find your house, it is just going to take that much longer to help you” Cronce added.
The Mayor said for those who would be thinking of putting up new numbers or numbers for the first time, a reflective display would be appreciated by all emergency personnel.
“They are much easier to see at night and it would really be a benefit to both groups.”
The Mayor added that you never know when you’ll find yourself in a critical emergency and every second counts. While emergencies like fires and accidents are easier to locate, others are not. Their have been instances where emergency crews have had a difficult time finding homes with hard to see numbers.
“There is a city ordinance and it is for the safety of the home owner” said Police Chief Mark Kohl. The Chief said they will remind residents if they locate a problem, but it has been an ongoing issue for quite a few years.
