Recent snowfalls in the last week have led to improved snowmobile and ski trail conditions. The DNR says that trails in the northern part of the state are partially open with fair to excellent condition, while trails in the central part of the state are considered to be in fair condition.
Ice conditions on northern lakes are good, according to the DNR, however it varies depending on the body of water. Travel has improved with the thaw and then re-freeze of the snow and water on top of the ice from the warm spell, leading to fewer slushy spots.
The cold weather and snow cover is a welcome sight for people gearing up for the upcoming sturgeon season, potentially maintaining water clarity and improved travel conditions on the ice.
