A group of volunteer hunters in the Waupaca area are hard at work going around the area to collect deer hides for the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation. This season Dave Hintz, who had been collecting hides since 2000, says the amount of donations have shattered his expectations.
“Last year we go about 740, but this year we are well over 1,200 hides” said Hintz. “My goal is to get $10,000 dollars donated, and I think I might meet that goal.”
That is exciting news to Hintz, despite the fact that the price for hides went down about $1.50. When asked how he feels about raising this money for such a good cause, he says it’s priceless.
“Some Weyauwega High School FFA kids are helping out.” Hintz said the work starting right at the end of the gun hunting season. It’s hard work at times, especially when Hintz is out collecting and salting in below freezing temperatures, but one of the things he’s most surprised about is the overwhelming offers to help him through this process.
Veterans have also volunteered their time as well, so many that he hasn’t had enough work for them all. There is one area where Hintz would ask for volunteer help.
“Get something into the Shawano, Clintonville and Marion area. If anyone wants to volunteer, it is needed.”
Hintz says his collection season never quite is finished. If any of the public would like to help Hintz and the Hides For Heroes mission this season or in the future, they can contact him at (715) 412-1161.
