The Shawano-Menominee County Heath Department dealt with an outbreak of Shigella in the Shawano School District during Summer School, and the news caused concern among parents.
Some parents opted to keep their kids home during the outbreak period, and school officials had the entire school cleaned and sanitized. said a recent outbreak of the Shigella bacteria has made schools and day care faculties take extra precautions when it comes to spreading germs.
County Public Health Nurse Kris Labby said some children in Shawano have been diagnosed and the warnings have been sent out.
“This infection has been in connection with some area daycares and Hillcrest school summer school,” Labby informed. “Shigella is very contagious from one person to another and so it is important that if a child or staff person have the symptoms, that they stay home from school or work until the problem can be determined and treatment can be completed.”
School Administration released the numbers of confirmed cases of Shigella, but the numbers were not as high as expected.
