Hortonville 67, Fond Du Lac 52 Hortonville was able to hold off a comeback from Fond Du Lac, and stayed atop the FVA with a 67-52 win on Tuesday. Shay Frederick had some big shots at key times to keep the Polar Bears in control. The Junior ended up with 23 points to lead all-scorers. First year coach Celesta Ratka said the Cardinals offered the early season challenge. “I was really excited to play Fond Du Lac and I am really happy with the way we responded to adversity,” said Ratka. That adversity came early. Hortonville jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first half, before giving up an 11-0 run to the Cardinals which made it a brand new game midway through the first half. “We talked about starting fast,” said Ratka. “I told the girls that we were going to make our runs and they were going to make their runs, and that is what happened.” Hortonville had another fast start in the second half, and it was enough to hold on for the victory. “We talked about not letting one play affect the next and having that next play mentality,” said Ratka. Shay Frederick was a big part of the teams offensive success. “She took care of the ball for us, she knocked down three’s, and anything you can ask for she did it and I am proud of her,” said Ratka. “It was a big momentum win for us, but we are going to go back to practice tomorrow and improve,” commented Frederick. The Polar Bears leading was all over the floor despite her smaller 5’5 size. “My teammates to a great job and our chemistry is so strong. All of us working together helps get the job done.” The Polar Bears had three players reach double digits. Morgan Allen added 15 and Emily Nelson scored 10 points. Fond Du Lac was led by Megan Dille with 17 points. “We had good stretches and bad stretches”said Frederick. “We did a good job playing our game in the end.”
