High School Wrestling:
Pulaski Edges Bay Port for First Win In Five Years
Pulaski 33, Bay Port 27
Pulaski’s Brandon King kept his perfect season in tact with a pin win to secure Pulaski’s 33-27 win over Bay Port, ending a four-season losing skid. King needed a win to secure the team victory in the second to last match at 195 pounds. King earned a second period pin, giving the Red Raiders the victory. Bay Port opened up with back to back wins and a 9-0 lead, and led 15-4 after the first four matches. Pulaski rattled off two straight wins, including a tech fall by Cole Gille to cut the lead to 15-12. Jarod Maes of Bay Port and Logan Bellow of Pulaski exchanged decisions and an 8-1 win by Brady Shulfer over Pulaski’s Lucas Gracylalny 8-1 to tie the dual at 21-21. With four matches to go, and a forfeit on the horizon, Pulaski got decision wins by Jake Gille and Peter Karcz to set up King for the win.
Holes in Panthers Lineup Leads To Struggles Against Freedom
Freedom 51, Oconto Falls 19
Freedom took advantage of Oconto Falls not being 100 percent, and left with a convincing 51-19 win. The Panthers had four wrestlers ineligible for the dual, forcing some younger guys to step up.
“We knew it was going to be tough without us being full strength, but hats off to Freedom” said Coach Mark Kinzinger. “They were beating us with whatever we had and you could tell they wanted some revenge from last year.”
Freedom pinned their way to victory with five pins in their ten wins.
“Bonus points are the difference maker and we got ours tonight” said Freedom Coach Justin Lancaster.
Despite taking a loss, Sophomore Grant Williamson went toe to toe with State Qualifier Mac Winkler. Lancaster said the fight that he saw showed a lot.
“He did not give up a pin or a tech fall, and I just liked the way he competed against a seasoned veteran.
“It just proves that we are stronger than people thought we are” said Williamson. “I think everyone was under estimating us in the beginning, but now they saw what we can do.”
Starting at 106 pounds, Freedom earned six straight wins to take control.
“We have a good lineup in the lower weights and I liked out chances with those guys coming up in the middle of the dual meet” said Lancaster.
With the meet tied at 10-10, Koy Murphy, Mitch Garvey, Sam Peters and Evan Vosters all picked up the pieces and earned pins.
Oconto Falls had three freshmen in the lineup and Kinzinger called it a learning opportunity.
“I would have liked to see our guys give a little more fight.”
Oconto Falls will be at full strength for the Battle on the Bay this weekend.
“The best learning we can take from this is understanding that they are better than what they showed tonight.”
Both teams were ranked in the top five entering the night.
Chargers Too Much For Manawa
Wittenberg-Birnamwood 72, Manawa 0
Wittenberg-Birnamwood earned 7 pins in a shutout 72-0 win over Manawa. The Chargers picked up 18 points in forfeits. Dylan Sprauge won by tech fall and Stetson Potrykus won major decision.
