At around 5:00 p.m. Monday evening, the New London Police Department responded to a call of a motor vehicle and pedestrian accident in the area of Division Street and Bruce Street within the city.
Police determined a 19-month-old female had been hit by a vehicle driven by a 74-year-old New London man who had been driving northbound on Division Street.
Upon investigation, authorities learned that the mother of the 19-month-old was adjusting a car seat in her vehicle while the child stood next to her. The 19-month-old then proceeded to walk into the roadway.
The 74-year-old New London man was driving a van northbound on Division Street, when he thought something hit his van. When he noticed it was a child in the road, he turned around and waited at the scene for police to arrive.
A witness that saw the incident called police immediately. The child was in the street at the time of the incident and before police arrived on scene, the mother of the child took her to ThedaCare New London, which is located about three blocks from the scene.
The child was released from the hospital and suffered non life-threatening injuries.
New London Police continue to investigate the incident.
